Homemade bread not only makes the house smells amazing, but it's something that ALWAYS looks and tastes better than what you can buy at the bakery. Impress your friends and family with this homemade challah bread!
Ingredients
For the Yeast
- 1 tsp of sugar
- ½ cup of warm water
- 2 ¼ tsp of yeast
For the Dough
- ½ cup of canola oil
- ½ cup of warm water
- ¼ cup of sugar
- ¼ cup of honey
- 2 tsp of salt
- 2 eggs
- 4 cups of flour
For the Topping
- 3 tbsp of sesame seeds
- 1 beaten egg
Directions
- DISSOLVE the tsp of sugar into the warm water
- STIR the yeast into the mixture
- REST for 20 minutes
- COMBINE the oil, warm water, sugar, honey, salt and eggs together in a separate bowl
- ADD the yeast mixture
- MIX in the flour slowly, while stirring the mixture
- COVER the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- KNEAD the dough for 5 minutes, adding flour if you need
- GREASE a mixing bowl, and place the dough inside
- COVER the dough for 90 minutes, let rise
- PUNCH the dough down
- COVER the dough again for another 60 minutes, let rise for a second time
- DIVIDE the dough into 4 equal parts, and then each of those in half
- ROLL each of them out, and tie them loosely into a knot
- COVER and let the buns rise once again, for another 30 minutes
- PREHEAT the oven to 400 degrees F
- BRUSH the buns with the beaten egg mixture and sprinkle with sesame seeds
- BAKE for 25 minutes, or until golden brown
Recipe Note: You can adjust this recipe to make a larger loaf, instead of just small buns. Feel free to braid it if you prefer that type of Challah instead. Feel free to include raisins in your dough, you would add these before you let them rise for the first time. You can also add poppy seeds instead of sesame seeds at the end, or za'atar for a savory kick.
